The internet is a weird place.  If you step back and think about it, you may ask yourself,  “Is this real life?” (see below).  Now more than ever, we witness things happening in real time on the web. If you’re not plugged in 24/7, it can be difficult to keep up.  We’re becoming more and more connected, but at what cost.  Several stories from this week made me wonder, “Are we oversharing?”

1) Look Mom, I’m a meme.

First of all, I’d like to take a moment and wish all the moms Happy Mother’s Day. You’re all doing wonderful job.

Parenting is hard enough, but the digital age has brought about new challenges.  You capture a moment, share it on the web, the world gets hold of it, and then it goes viral.  Learn from the parents of David After the Dentist and Success Kid about how they handled their kids’ internet success.

Never heard of either of them?  Success Kid is known for his extraordinary abilities to come out on top of everyday situations.  As for David After the Dentist, if you’re not one of 110 million views on YouTube, then watch below.  How would you deal with your child going viral?

2) The World’s Most Revealing Photos

Live Tweet During Brain Surgery

This week social media was on some people’s brains more than others, literally.  Houston’s Memorial Hospital live tweeted a brain surgery and connected with 14.5 million people.  Incredible.

How would you feel hearing the surgeon say, “Knife, Camera, Action!” ?

3) Star Wars Search Wars

Google and Bing aren’t lesser known characters from Star Wars, as we all know.  However, the two search giants are going toe-to-toe in a war over how to integrate social media into our internet queries.  Bing took the next big swing by having Facebook data load in the right sidebar.  Are we approaching information overload?
